Dear Fellow Rotarians,

Welcome to the official start of the 2008-2009 Rotary year! I hope you all know how excited I am to serve as your Governor and to serve with you, as a fellow Rotarian. I am also excited to bring you our monthly district newsletter “The Real Deal” which will be sent to you via email and posted on this website. Each newsletter will be packed with Rotary information that is aimed to be useful, inspirational and fun! I hope you find it valuable and share it with many others.

Throughout the years, the Rotarians of this district have been involved in many amazing humanitarian efforts, touching so many lives. During the 2008-2009 year I am confident that our humanitarian efforts will not only continue, but will soar to new heights. I believe this because I have seen your enthusiasm! I have seen your drive! I have seen your “Rotary Spirit” and I am inspired to serve, in Rotary, with you all! Together we can build goodwill; we can work towards peace and a Polio free world; we can achieve great things for our communities, our nation, and for all of mankind. Together, as Rotarians, we can change lives… and we will Make Dreams Real!

Yours, In Rotary Service,

District Governor Mary Berge

Lee asks Rotarians to ‘Make Dreams Real’ for world’s childrenD K Lee

RI President-elect Dong Kurn Lee takes over the presidency of Rotary International on July 1, 2008.

He announced the 2008-09 RI theme, Make Dreams Real, to incoming district governors at the 2008 International Assembly.

Rotary International President-elect Dong Kurn Lee addressed incoming district governors at the 2008 International Assembly, urging them to use their resources to help curb child mortality. Lee said he was in disbelief when he learned that 30,000 children under the age of five die every day from preventable diseases such as pneumonia, measles, and malaria.

"Once I understood the issues behind that terrible number, I knew what I needed to do," Lee said. He told the incoming governors that Rotary will keep the service emphases of recent years -- water, health and hunger, and literacy -- but asked them to focus their efforts in each of these areas on children.

"In 2008-09, I will ask you all to Make Dreams Real for the world's children," he said. "This will be our theme, and my challenge to all of you."
